CARP RIG GUIDES

The Only 4 Carp Rigs You Need for Most Fishing Situations

With so many carp rigs available, it's easy to think you need a different presentation for every lake and every hookbait. But in my experience, four carefully chosen carp rigs will cover most everyday carp fishing situations on UK waters.

In this guide, I'll explain why the Blowback Rig, Fluorocarbon D Rig, Ronnie Rig and Solid PVA Bag Rig are four of the most useful carp rigs to carry, when I'd use each one and where their limitations are.

What Are the 4 Essential Carp Rigs?

If you're wondering which carp rigs you actually need, I'd start with four presentations that cover the main hookbait types and fishing methods most of us regularly use.

At Ricks Rigz, we hand-tie ready made carp rigs for UK anglers. The aim isn't to make rig choice complicated. It's to have confidence in the presentation you're using and understand when it's suitable.

The four rigs I'd recommend having available are: the Blowback Rig for bottom baits and wafters, the Fluorocarbon D Rig for a stiffer presentation, the Ronnie Rig for pop-ups and a short Solid PVA Bag Rig for compact presentations surrounded by feed.

1. Blowback Rig – A Versatile All-Round Carp Rig

If I could only carry one rig for fishing bottom baits and wafters, the Blowback Rig would certainly be near the top of my list.

The Blowback Rig uses a hair-mounted hookbait with a ring or similar arrangement that allows movement along the hook shank. This helps separate the hookbait from the hook during the hooking process.

One of its biggest advantages is versatility. You can fish it with a standard bottom bait, balance it with a wafter or use a critically balanced hookbait when correctly adjusted.

When Should You Use a Blowback Rig?

I'd reach for a Blowback Rig when fishing over clean gravel, clay or relatively firm silt, particularly when presenting a bottom bait or wafter among scattered boilies.

Advantages of the Blowback Rig

  • Suitable for wafters, bottom baits and critically balanced hookbaits.
  • Versatile presentation for everyday carp fishing.
  • Works well with a variety of hooklink materials.
  • A practical option for beginners and experienced anglers.
  • Can be adapted to different hookbait sizes and presentations.

Disadvantages of the Blowback Rig

  • Hair length needs to suit the hookbait being used.
  • Not always the best choice over heavy weed or thick debris.
  • Hookbait balance and hook movement should be checked before casting.

Our rig specification: Korda N-Trap coated braid, curve shank hook, standard-length hair and a 7-inch hooklink.

Best suited to: Wafters, critically balanced baits and bottom baits over reasonably clean lakebeds.

2. Fluorocarbon D Rig – A Stiff Carp Rig for Clean Lakebeds

There are situations where I'd rather use a stiff hooklink than a coated braid. That's where the Fluorocarbon D Rig comes in.

Fluorocarbon is relatively stiff, sinks well and can provide a discreet presentation underwater. Although it's often described as invisible, that isn't strictly true. The way the hooklink settles on the lakebed is more important.

The stiffness can help reduce tangles and allows the rig to reset when used with a suitable lead arrangement.

When Should You Use a Fluorocarbon D Rig?

I'd consider one when fishing wafters or balanced bottom baits over clean gravel, clay or firm areas where the hooklink can settle naturally.

Advantages of the Fluorocarbon D Rig

  • Stiff hooklink can help reduce tangles.
  • Useful for wafters and critically balanced hookbaits.
  • Fluorocarbon sinks well and can be visually discreet.
  • Suitable for clean gravel, clay and firm lakebeds.
  • Provides an alternative to conventional braided hooklinks.

Disadvantages of the Fluorocarbon D Rig

  • Less suitable for very uneven lakebeds or heavy debris.
  • Stiff hooklinks may not settle naturally over deep weed.
  • Hookbait balance and D arrangement must be correct.

Our rig specification: 100% 18lb fluorocarbon, curve shank hook and a 7-inch hooklink.

Best suited to: Wafters, critically balanced hookbaits and bottom baits over cleaner lakebeds.

3. Ronnie Rig (Spinner Rig) – A Popular Pop-Up Carp Rig

Ready made Ronnie Spinner carp rig for pop up fishing from Ricks Rigz
Ronnie and Spinner Rigs are popular for low-lying pop-up presentations and rotating hook mechanics.

When it comes to fishing pop-ups, the Ronnie Rig, also known as the Spinner Rig, is one of my preferred presentations.

The Ronnie Rig uses a swivel arrangement that allows the hook to rotate independently of the boom section. When assembled correctly, this can help the hook turn as a carp picks up the bait.

When Should You Use a Ronnie Rig?

I'd use a Ronnie Rig when I want to present a pop-up close to the lakebed, particularly over relatively clean areas or light debris.

Advantages of the Ronnie Rig

  • Excellent hook rotation when assembled correctly.
  • Designed for low-lying pop-up presentations.
  • Stiff boom versions can help reduce tangles.
  • Useful for single hookbaits or scattered boilie fishing.
  • Hookbait changes can be straightforward.

Disadvantages of the Ronnie Rig

  • Requires a suitably buoyant pop-up.
  • Hookbait balance should always be checked.
  • Not necessarily ideal over heavy weed or deep debris.

Our rig specification: Curve shank hook, ultra-strong clear boom and a 7-inch hooklink.

Best suited to: Pop-up hookbaits presented close to the lakebed.

4. Solid PVA Bag Rig – A Compact Carp Fishing Presentation

Ready made solid PVA bag carp rig for compact bait presentations
Short, supple hooklinks are well suited to compact solid PVA bag presentations.

The fourth rig I'd always have available is a Solid PVA Bag Rig.

Solid bag fishing allows you to present your hookbait alongside a concentrated parcel of suitable feed.

The hooklink and hookbait are packed inside a dissolvable PVA bag alongside pellets, crumb or other suitable bag mixes. Once the bag dissolves, the hookbait sits among the feed.

When Should You Use a Solid PVA Bag Rig?

I'd consider solid bags when targeting a small clear spot, fishing at showing carp or wanting a compact presentation around the hookbait.

Advantages of Solid PVA Bag Rigs

  • Compact hookbait presentation surrounded by feed.
  • Low risk of tangling when the bag is packed correctly.
  • Useful for accurate placement on small feeding spots.
  • Can be effective throughout the year.
  • Suitable for a variety of properly balanced hookbaits.

Disadvantages of Solid PVA Bag Rigs

  • Preparing solid bags takes additional time.
  • PVA needs protecting from moisture before casting.
  • Large bags can reduce casting distance.
  • Hooklink length and bait balance must suit the bag.

Our rig specification: 3 inches of Korda Super Natural braid with a curve shank hook.

Best suited to: Solid PVA bag fishing with bottom baits, wafters and suitable pop-ups.

Which Carp Rig Should You Choose?

Choosing the best carp rig starts with understanding the hookbait and the lakebed. The following table provides a useful starting point for everyday UK carp fishing.

Carp Rig Best Hookbait Fishing Situation
Blowback Rig Wafters, bottom baits Clean gravel, clay and firm silt
Fluorocarbon D Rig Wafters, balanced baits Cleaner lakebeds where a stiff hooklink suits
Ronnie / Spinner Rig Pop-ups Low-lying pop-up presentations
Solid PVA Bag Rig Bottom baits, wafters, suitable pop-ups Compact feed presentations inside solid bags

Are These Really the Only 4 Carp Rigs You Need?

For most everyday carp fishing situations, I believe these four rigs provide an excellent starting point.

They cover bottom baits, wafters, pop-ups, critically balanced presentations and solid PVA bag fishing.

However, there are exceptions. If you're fishing over thick weed, heavy debris or awkward lakebeds, specialist presentations such as Chod Rigs or Hinged Stiff Rigs may be more suitable.

In my opinion, learning how four rigs behave is far more valuable than carrying twenty different rig patterns without understanding when to use them.
