Shot On The Hook Rigs – The Norton Nailer Spinner Mechanics

Our Ready Made Shot On The Hook Rigs (known as the "Norton Nailer") bring the cutting-edge Spinner Rig variation highlighted in Korda's Norton Lakes underwater film straight to your bankside setup. Designed explicitly for wafters and critically balanced hookbaits, this rig forces the hook point downward every single time to deliver exceptional hook holds in the bottom lip.

Hand-tied and precision-crimped by Ricks Rigz, this presentation combines a long shank hook and D-rig aligner with a 360° quick-change spinner swivel. Equipped with a repositionable tungsten hook bead, the hook acts as an instant keel, ensuring that no matter which direction the carp approaches from, the hook spins and drops point-first instantly upon intake.

Available in short, effective 3 to 4-inch lengths on clear Amnesia, Black, or Camo Fleck stiff boom materials, this rig offers maximum resetting capability and total anti-tangle reliability.

Mechanical Precision: Downward Keel Action & 360° Uninhibited Rotation

The mechanics of the Norton Nailer Shot On The Hook Rig optimize hook mechanics by combining rotational freedom with strategic weighting. The long shank hook coupled with a D-rig aligner creates an aggressive entry angle, while the spinner swivel provides uninhibited 360° movement.

The addition of the specialized tungsten hook bead acts as a heavy counterweight right on the hook bend. This guarantees the point hangs down toward the lakebed. When a carp inhales the balanced hookbait, the weight transfer from hook eye to point occurs immediately, pinning the lower lip before the fish can attempt ejection.

Precision-crimped connections replace bulky knots, ensuring maximum break strength, streamlined casting, and a completely self-resetting architecture after aborted takes.

Why Choose Ricks Rigz Ready Made Norton Nailer Rigs?

  • Latest Spinner Rig variation as featured in Korda's Norton Lakes underwater masterclass
  • Hand tied and individually inspected in the UK
  • Tungsten hook bead forces the hook point to face downwards for superior bottom-lip hook holds
  • Long shank hook paired with a D-rig aligner for aggressive anti-eject turning speeds
  • Unrestricted 360° hook rotation reacts instantaneously regardless of approach angle
  • Choice of reusable Medium (Size 6 hooks / silt / weed) or Large (Size 4 hooks / hard beds) tungsten beads
  • Choice of crimped stiff boom materials in Clear, Black, or subtle Camo Fleck
  • Optimized in short 3 to 4-inch lengths for rapid hook-up efficiency with heavy inline leads
  • Terminated in size 8 swivels (lead clip/inline), ring swivels (helicopter setups), or loops (QC swivels)
  • Available across multiple hook sizes with micro-barbed and barbless options

Every rig is produced with strict bench consistency, giving you tournament-grade terminal mechanics so you spend less time fine-tuning components and more time putting fish on the bank.

When and How to Fish the Norton Nailer Rig

The Norton Nailer Shot On The Hook Rig is an all-season powerhouse that excels over clear, hard lakebeds, clean gravel, and light weed or silt when using balanced presentations.

It is the ideal choice for:

  • Fishing wafters, slow-sinking, and critically balanced boilies flat to the deck
  • Pairing with heavy inline lead arrangements to minimize rig movement and force immediate pricking
  • Targeting rig-wary carp on heavily pressured venues where instant hook rotation is required
  • Short-range or long-distance casting where 100% anti-tangle, self-resetting performance is essential
  • Setting up lead clips on firm ground or helicopter arrangements over softer substrates

Best Hookbaits & Angler Tips for Shot On The Hook Rigs

To get the absolute best performance out of your ready made Norton Nailer Shot On The Hook Rigs, follow these bankside tips from our rig-tying bench:

  • Testing Rig Balance: Test the rig in the margins or a water bucket before casting. The hook should lay flat on the deck while your wafter hovers upright directly beside it (like a snowman setup). This provides optimal weight transfer to the point upon intake.
  • Lead Selection: Pair this rig with a heavy inline lead. The resistance of a heavy inline lead amplifies the downward pricking action of the tungsten bead before the fish realizes it has taken the bait.
  • Reusing Tungsten Beads: The specialized tungsten hook beads can be repositioned along the bend or slid off and reused on fresh hook sections multiple times.

After seeing the Korda video I decided to buy the Norton Nailer and what can i say! Exceptional hook holds, very well made and I have not lost one fish when using this rig. I find adding a small bit of rig putty on the boom section helps to keep everything pinned down. I am so impressed I have actually ordered more of these rigs but with different weight tungsten beads to give me more options.
I strongly recommend the Norton Nailer to anyone who fishes with a balanced bait!

RICKS RIGZ BUYING GUIDE

Choosing Your Ready Made Carp Rig

Use this guide to select the most suitable hook, hooklink, bait attachment and end connection for your fishing situation.

01

Choose the Hook Size

Match the hook size to your hook bait, target fish and fishery rules. Larger hooks can suit bigger baits, while smaller hooks provide a more discreet presentation.

02

Select a Hook Pattern

Wide gape, curve shank, crank and claw-style patterns offer different turning and holding characteristics. Choose the pattern that best suits your preferred presentation.

03

Choose the Hooklink or Boom

Shorter hooklinks create a compact presentation, while longer hooklinks provide greater separation and may suit softer lakebeds or more cautious carp.

04

Select the Bait Attachment

Bait screws make hook-bait changes quick, rig rings provide a traditional attachment and micro ring swivels allow greater freedom of movement.

05

Barbless or Micro-Barbed

Always check the rules of the fishery before selecting your hook type. Some waters require barbless hooks, while others permit micro-barbed patterns.

06

Check Before Casting

Check the hook point, knots, crimps and hooklink for damage before every cast. Replace any rig that appears blunt, kinked or weakened.

Rig selection tip: Match the rig to the hook bait, lakebed and fishing conditions rather than choosing solely by appearance.

RIG QUESTIONS ANSWERED

Frequently Asked Questions

Practical answers based on this rig's setup, hookbait compatibility and the conditions it is designed to fish in.

PRODUCT SPECIFIC
What type of rig is Shot On The Hook Rigs - The Norton Nailer?

This is a Shot On The Hook Rigs - The Norton Nailer supplied ready tied and ready to fish. The idea is to give you a dependable starting point, then let you choose the hookbait and final options to suit the water in front of you.

Which hookbaits work well with Shot On The Hook Rigs - The Norton Nailer?

This rig works well with Wafters and Bottom Baits / Boilies. Whichever hookbait you choose, make sure it is balanced to suit the rig so it settles cleanly and reacts quickly when a carp picks it up.

What lakebeds can I fish Shot On The Hook Rigs - The Norton Nailer over?

It is a good option over gravel, mud and clay. I would still check the spot before casting, because a clean presentation matters more than the label on the lakebed. If there is weed, debris or very soft silt, adjust the setup so the rig can settle properly.

When would you use Shot On The Hook Rigs - The Norton Nailer?

This is a versatile rig that can be used through Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. I would still let the conditions on the day guide the final setup, especially water temperature, fish activity and how confidently the carp are feeding.

How is the hookbait meant to sit?

This rig can be fished with Wafter Presentation and Bottom Bait Presentation. The final presentation will depend on the hookbait you choose, its buoyancy and the lakebed you are fishing over, so it is worth checking the rig in the edge before casting out.
